Backcountry Camping 101


Have you ever wanted to learn how to backcountry camp? This beginner weekend in partnership with MEC Outdoor Nation starts off with a comfortable night in the Whiskey Jack Hotel right beside the famous Takakkaw Falls. We will hike 8km the next day and spend the second night in the backcountry at a waterfall called Twin Falls. This Getaway is the perfect opportunity to try out backcountry camping, as almost everything is included; such as tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, and more (see below for what is included and not included) This getaway will be filled with the amazing views, new opportunities and the chance to get to know like minded women.

The Getaway is hosted by Jill Weenink, a Women Who Explore Ambassador, Backpacker and a Paramedic. Her Co-Host is Jaleesa Elford who is also an Avid Backpacker, Photographer and Paramedic.

Itinerary August 15th-17th, 2018

Day One

Arrive in at Takakka Falls, which is right outside of Field, BC. Meet at Whiskey Jack Hostel. Check in is at 6pm. If flying, we recommend flying into Calgary International Airport and renting a car. The drive is about 2.5hrs.

Once you arrive, you can get settled into your room and meet the other ladies! Introductions will be made this evening.
The night will be filled with tips on how to organize your gear, trip planning, and safety. We will be distributing your gear to you and helping you pack your bag. We will get to know each other and rest up for the next day. We will provide snacks but supper is up to you. The hostel has a full kitchen.

Day Two 

8am- Breakfast will be continental style. There will be bagels, oatmeal, fruit, coffee and tea.

8:30am- Pack your bagged lunches. You can bring your own lunch or pack a lunch for day 2 and day 3 today. Lunch consists of PBJ Sandwiches, granola bars and fruit.

9:00am- Pack up your backpack.

9:30am- Checkout and head for the trail.

We will be hiking to Twin Falls Campground in Yoho National Park. The hike into Twin Falls Campground will take us around..
Time: 4 hours
Distance: 8.2 km
Elevation Gain: 300 m

We will make rest stops along the way. Once we arrive at the campground we will set up camp. If your legs are keen you can continue another 2km to see Twins falls.

Supper is up to you. We suggest going into an outdoor store before you come on the trip and grab a dehydrated meal of your choice.
The night will consist of card games, laughs, star gazing and enjoying the nature around us with an amazing group of women.

Day Three

8:00am- Rise and Shine. Breakfast will be up to you. Oatmeal packets is a great option. Don't forget instant coffee or tea if you need it in the morning to wake you up

9:00am- Pack-up. Leave no trace. All garage comes out with us.

10:00am- Make out way back to the cars while enjoying all of the amazing waterfalls along the way.

2:30pm- After the hike say goodbye to the beautiful surroundings and the new friends you have made!
