Kora Shola 250 Crew Base Layer

Review: Kora Shola 230 Crew

With the temperatures well below freezing up here in Canada, a good baselayer is essential to me and I personally don’t mind shelling out good money for one. I’ve tried many, loved a few, disliked many and others just not my style. I also happen to insist on a well made product, and generally lean towards companies that do good for our world.

Enter in Kora, a fairly young company that first introduced it’s products to the world in 2013. A little about this company, founder Micheal is a keen conservationist, endurance triathlete, Himalayan explorer and linguist (impressive eh?). He spent the 2 years refining his vision: a social company creating the world’s best technical base layers, run on fair trade principles.

So what sets Kora apart? Their use of Yak Wool for starters. Turns out these Yaks have a pretty awesome wool under layer that falls off naturally each spring. Turns out this wool makes for one awesome baselayer. Here’s some stats for you:

  • It’s 66% more breathable and 40% warmer, weight for weight compared with merino.
  • Wicks moisture efficiently and allows sweat vapour to escape from your skin, so you won’t overheat or feel clammy.
  • Naturally anti-bacterial fabric smells fresher longer – so you can pack light.
  • Built-in 40+ UPF sun protection.
  • Feels soft like cashmere – and there’s no itch

They don’t lie. The fabric feels soft against my skin with no itch. The breath-ability is impressive, getting sweaty while conquering mountains is a constant struggle for me and despite the fact that this top keeps me warm, it doesn’t keep me sweaty. The fit does run a little small, I normally wear a size small but opted for the medium after the great people at Kora suggested I go a size up. I also happen to love that it’s a basic black color that doesn’t scream obnoxious, thus allowing me to wear it anytime, whether I throw a shell over it or wear it on its own.

Verdict: Worth the money, comfortable, delivers on its promise and I feel good about buying it from this socially responsible company.
