Mountainsmith Mayhem 35 Pack

Review: Mountainsmith Mayhem 35 WSD

Written by L & J

The Mountainsmith Mayhem 35 WSD is designed specifically for women and I was more than stocked to get my hands on one. First up, the huckleberry colour is beautiful and stands out from other backpacks without being an obnoxious bright pink or orange. Considering I do a ton of snowshoeing and hiking in the winter, it’s nice to have a bright pack that stands out.

I decided to go with the 35 because of the size, I needed something that could double as a day pack as well as a weekend pack. A few things stood out to me right away, the large mesh pocket on the front, the weight of the pack and all the hidden amenities it has.

The large mesh pocket on the outside is possibly my favorite part of the pack, so far it has held hats and mitts, snowshoes with collapsible bindings, water bottles, a double hammock, extra clothing and my laptop. Just about anything fits in that front pocket. It is important to note that the front pocket does not zip up, instead it is clipped into the sides and has an open top for easy access.

The weight of the pack is light, coming in at just under 2 lbs which means I can pack it full and it still doesn’t put an ounce of strain on my back, legs or shoulders. The PE framesheet with wireframe load dispersion and stabilizer bar helps with that as well. The shoulder and waist belt are made from ultra-durable CORDURA® fabric. The pack is so comfortable that there has been numerous times when it’s been loaded up and I have been carrying it for hours, only to look down and notice I didn’t even do the waistband up. It’s just that comfortable.

Personally I love the little added touches that Mountainsmith has taken care to put on this pack including the waistband pocket that fits my iPhone, the side cant-water bottle pocket and the hydration sleeve with bladder hook. Also the top zip pocket with the key ring ensures I am never without car keys when I reach the parking lot (trust me, it happens). The other pockets include a deep stash side pocket that holds a large water bottle, amongst other things as well as a quick access waist pocket which I use to store snacks. I quickly found out that the trekking pole loops can be used for other things including storing mugs and attaching just about anything, thanks to the genius clip solution.
