Expectations of Group Travel and the Power of Connection

Why would anyone choose to travel with a group of strangers? Traveling on a women-only adventure with people one has never met is a journey unlike any other. While the bucket-list destination or the challenging trek often take center stage as the reason people come together, I’ve learned it’s the bonds that form along the way that make these adventures truly memorable. Even though traveling with a group of women brings together a tangled mix of personalities and perspectives, I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Since I first became involved with Women Who Explore, I’ve been lucky enough to travel as both a guest and a trip host to places I never dreamed of exploring. On day one of each trip, it never fails; I look into the faces of my travel mates and am reminded of the magic that happens when like-minded women come together for a shared adventure. Yet it often becomes apparent early on that our individual expectations can be very different—some are seeking an escape in a far-away place, some are ticking items off a bucket-list, and some are craving connection and conversation. There are those who thrive on meticulously planned itineraries, and those who find joy in spontaneity. Everyone brings a different energy level and vibe about as fluctuating as a weather forecast. Despite these differences, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some of the most extraordinary women through these journeys. As our shared story unfolds, I am always inspired to see the world through eyes other than my own. In the end, the friendships forged on these trips have often transcended the journey itself.

What is the best mindset for group travel? Positive expectations play a crucial role in ensuring a rewarding adventure. Being open-minded, supportive, and adaptable can make all the difference. While we all hope for everything to go according to plan, the reality of travel often includes surprises and detours. When things don’t go as expected, embracing a positive mindset and focusing on the silver linings can turn a setback into a story we can’t wait to share back home. From an unexpected blizzard in Nepal to the unrelenting traffic in India, I’ve learned firsthand that some things simply couldn’t be avoided—and we all felt the impact.

Group travel might not be for everyone. It requires flexibility, patience, and a willingness to embrace the dynamics of many personalities in an unfamiliar setting. But for those who are open to it, the rewards are unparalleled. There’s a unique joy in knowing you’re part of something bigger than yourself—part of a collective journey where everyone’s presence enriches the experience. I’ve watched women who began as strangers become lifelong friends. I, too, cherish the deep connections I’ve made along the way, and I can’t imagine making these memories without the incredible people who helped create them. There’s that cryptic phrase often used to avoid naming names: “you know who you are.” Well, if we’ve traveled together, I can assure you that you left your mark on my journey in some way, and I’m truly grateful we met.

At the heart of these adventures is the feeling of belonging, the camaraderie, and the pulse of discovering the world together. Whether it’s completing a challenging trek, wandering among a foreign city’s attractions, or simply sharing new cultural discoveries together, these moments form a feeling of sisterhood. Together, we’ve forged a bond that no one else will ever understand once the trip has completed. When we approach these adventures with positivity and a willingness to adapt to events as they unfold, we create an environment where everyone thrives. Even though each trip becomes a brief chapter in our lives once we return home, it’s a reminder that the true treasures of travel lie not only in the destination but in the people we share it with. What’s the best part once we’re home and unpacked? Getting that text soon after that says, “Where should we go next? I can’t wait to see you again!”
