My First Rock Climbing Experience: Overcoming Fear and Self-Doubt in Arizona
How a beginner rock climbing trip taught me that failure isn't the end - it's just the beginning of growth!
I went rock climbing for the first time on a women's adventure getaway in Arizona, and I have so many big feelings about this day. As a complete beginner surrounded by experienced climbers, including Melissa, one of the owners of Women Who Explore, I was petrified.
Facing My Fear of Rock Climbing
I was afraid I would fail and make a fool of myself in front of these badass women. Self-doubt crept in hard, which was unusual for me. When we arrived at the climbing slab, I had one of only two panic attacks I've ever experienced. I separated from the group and ugly cried behind my sunglasses, reaching out to my family for support. Their "you got this" texts finally silenced the voices in my head enough to try.
My First Climb: Almost Giving Up Before Starting
I almost quit before reaching the first foothold, but our guide and Melissa wouldn't let me give up. Eventually, I got going and made it about ¾ of the way up before calling it quits and rappelling down. I decided rock climbing was a "one and done" activity for me—but I was proud I'd tried.
Trying Again: Why Rock Climbing Gets Harder Before It Gets Easier
After watching the other women summit, I decided to attempt it again. I thought knowing what to expect would make it easier the second time. It wasn't—I didn't make it as far. Interestingly, I loved the rappelling portion that others found scariest.
After my second attempt, I decided to photograph the group and enjoy the scenery instead. As another ambassador and I headed back down the steep, cactus-lined crag, I lost my footing and face-planted into a rock. Not my finest moment! I was banged up, bleeding, hot, and disappointed.
Why My "Failed" Climbing Day Was Actually Epic
By all accounts, the day was a total failure. EXCEPT…that it wasn't. It was EPIC.
Even though I didn't summit, I tried something I'd never done before. I was inspired by incredible women who never made me feel like I failed. The love and support from people I'd met just the day before was mind-blowing. I felt badass on that rock, even on the way down.
How Rock Climbing Built My Confidence for Future Adventures
A few months later in Costa Rica, I was first in line to rappel down a waterfall. I knew I could do it because of my Arizona climbing experience. It was awesome—maybe I should stick to the going-down part!
Ready to Try Rock Climbing Again
I've decided I was wrong about climbing being "one and done." I will be trying again, and this time I WILL make it to the top.
