What I Learned from Group Travel as a Middle-Aged Introvert

As introverts, many of us assume group travel isn't for us. But sometimes the adventures we want most require us to step outside our comfort zoneβ€”and the rewards can be greater than we ever imagined.

All the influencers are sharing their stunning photos on social media. You WANT to travel more, but your friends aren’t interested, your spouse is preoccupied, and the idea of going solo makes you anxious. You’ve certainly heard about group travel, but as an introvert, you think this kind of group travel experience isn’t for you. You require your alone time to relax, recharge, and unwind. The thought of being surrounded by strangers for several daysβ€”sharing a room, engaging in small talk, or trying to fit into cliquesβ€”makes you uneasy.

Then, the perfect trip comes alongβ€”one you’ve been longing for. You rush to find someone, ANYONE, to join you, but once again, everyone is too busy. Are you really going to let this opportunity slip away?

I had never experienced group travel before. In fact, I was convinced I would never want to meet a bunch of strangers and travel the world with themβ€”it sounded like my worst nightmare. But then the trip I had been dreaming about finally had an opening. I'd been watching it for months, hoping the timing would work out, but I still had no one to join me. When a cancellation created one last opportunity, I had to ask myself: Was I really going to let this adventure pass me by just because I didn't have a travel companion?

What’s a girl to do?

So, I took the plunge and clicked the β€˜book now’ button. I figured worst-case scenario, I’d spend the whole week enjoying this beautiful area by myself. But I learned so much by being brave and putting myself out there.

Insights from a 50-Year-Old Introvert on Group Travel

1. Know Thyself

Understanding your personality is crucial before selecting a trip. Consider the following:

  • Do you require your own room?

  • Are there any specific dietary needs you have?

  • Do you prefer a fast-paced itinerary or more downtime?

These factors are essential for ensuring a successful travel experience and booking the right trip and experiences for yourself.

2. Roommate

If you're traveling solo, you’ll likely be assigned a roommate. If possible, try to identify who they are before the trip and reach out to them through direct messages. Gather some basic information about them and explore any common interests.

From my experience, knowing details such as their sleeping habits, hometown, and profession can significantly help establish a connection before you even meet.

3. Get to Know Everyone

You won’t hit it off with everyone, and that's perfectly fine (and true to life). However, you won't discover who you click with unless you take some initiative. Be courageous and put yourself out there. Share meals with a variety of people, engage in activities with different groups, and enjoy games after dinner. This will provide a relaxed atmosphere to connect with others.

4. Embrace Your Alone Time

As an introvert, it's natural to need some solitude. Embrace it! You might be surprised to find that many others feel the same way. Take time to read a book, enjoy a nap, or take a walk. Just because you’re in a group doesn’t mean you have to be with them at all times. Just ensure that someone knows where you are.

Will I do group travel again?

Absolutely! When you combine the right trip with an amazing group like Women Who Explore, even a middle-aged introvert can have fun surrounded by a bunch of strangers who inevitably will become friends.

P.S. β€” This trip was co-ed, which I thought would have it’s challenges, but there were none. The men were so fun and kind to be around. The couples didn’t just hang out with each other, but also included single travelers. If you’ve been sitting on the fence about doing a group trip, it’s time to get off. There is a trip out there for everyone!
