This adventure is rated 4 out of 5 difficulty level. This means that adventurers should be comfortable hiking 10+ miles with elevation gain/loss of 3k+ feet. This trip requires that you carry only a day pack and accommodations are in lodges, mountain huts and/or hotels. Highest elevation on the trail does not exceed 9k feet. Training for this adventure should be taken seriously.
*The Acatenango volcano hike is the only reason why this adventure is rated at a 4 on the difficulty scale. The hike is considered challenging but manageable for those with moderate fitness level. The trail is steep with loose gravel in some sections and can by physical demanding. It takes approximately 4.5 to 6 hours to hike, and the elevation and potential for altitude sickness make it challenging.

ITINERARY

Welcome to Guatemala! Arrive at the La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City (GUA) by 12 p.m. There will be one group transfer provided from the airport to the hotel in Antigua (1-2 hours drive)
Check into your boutique hotel which focuses on sustainability and community support. Each night’s stay here helps fund one week of school for a child in Guatemala.

Enjoy a 3 hour guided city tour ending at the indoor/outdoor Central Market
Time to shop and enjoy lunch
Hands-on Jade artisan workshop where you will make a piece of jewelry to take home with you.

Relax on a ?? hour scenic drive as we make our way to the Actenango Volcano trailhead.
Hike through 4 different and distinct microclimates as you make your way to our rustic camp for the evening. The hike will take approximately 4.5-6 hours. It is rated as moderate-moderate challenging as it has some areas of loose gravel and steep elevation gain in some sections.
Arrive in the afternoon and enjoy some downtime in nature with magnificent views.
Tonight enjoy a delicious dinner prepared for you with the group.
Relax by the campfire and watch the stunning views of Actaenango’s lava activity.

Wake up before the sun to watch it rise from the summit. The hike up is approximately 1-1.5 hours to the summit.
Enjoy breakfast back at basecamp before hiking out. The descent takes approximately 3 hours.
Relax on our scenic drive to Panajachel. We will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant along the way.
Check into the hotel located on the shores of Lake Atitlán and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure. There is an onsite pool, jacuzzi, spa and beautiful gardens with stunning views.

Enjoy sunrise and breakfast at your leisure taking in the stunning views of Lake Atitlán.
After breakfast enjoy an optional visit to the Atitlán Nature Reserve. There are three trails, a small waterfall and butterfly garden to visit. With luck spot Spider monkeys and Coatis.

Afternoon at leisure to relax at the hotel, enjoy a massage or explore Panajachel.

Enjoy breakfast with incredible views of Lake Atitlán
Hop in a water taxi to the town of San Juan la Laguna for a day of exploring.
Visit Casa Flor Ixcaco Textile Cooperative for a natural dying and weaving demonstration.
Enjoy typical Guatemalan dishes for lunch & cacao demonstration at Licor Marrón.
Visit the Association Qómaneel an inspiring project led by women including healers, bone doctors and midwives where they share their experience and knowledge about holistic healing. We will learn about 15 different plants and explore their medicinal benefits.
Guatemalan ceramics workshop & visit to San Antonio Palopó.

Relax and enjoy the 3-5 hour drive to Guatemala City.

This trip requires a minimum number of women to register in order for it to be confirmed. Once the trip reaches the minimum participant number, you will receive a trip confirmation email and a link to be added a private Facebook group just for trip guests. In this group further trip details will be provided along with pre-travel support. Please let us know if you do not have or use Facebook (see contact information below).

Travel (and medical) insurance is required for anyone traveling on a Women Who Explore adventure. Your insurance should include adequate protection for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment and the specific activities involved on your adventure. Your insurance policy should also include specific Covid-19 cover, including cancellation and curtailment cover if you or a close relative are diagnosed with Covid-19.
